Cory with
his first Antelope. Cory shot this Antelope in October of 1999 in
Nebraska. Here's what Cory's dad wrote about their hunt.
Cory is my son and he had drawn his first antelope tag and the only
time he could hunt was the opening Saturday and Sunday and only after
homecoming which was Friday night. We arose 4:30 AM Saturday morning
and were on the road by 5. It's a 6 hour drive to the ranch in Sioux
county in Nebraska where he was going to hunt. We arrived at the
ranch, stopped at the house to reintroduce ourselves and then
negotiated the gates and corrals to get to the hunting grounds. We
topped the first hill and started glassing. After just a couple of
minutes we spotted 5 or 6 does feeding and moving through a pasture
trailed by what appeared a nice buck. We drove back down the hill and
through a couple of canyons and then hoofed the last several hundred
yards to a rise where, if all worked out, Cory should be able to get
a shot at the antelope. He crawled to the top of the rise, steadied
himself and took a shot. I jumped up, saw the buck and six doe
running and said "Which one did you shot at?" Before he could answer
the buck went down head over heels. One shot at 240 yards with the
.243 95 grain Nosler BT I had loaded did the trick. We had spent 6
hours getting there and about 15 minutes hunting and it was all over.
Well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
P.S. Hopefully next year I'll draw a tag.
