The Gray Squirrel is the state mammal of North
Carolina. A native of North America, this species was introduced to Great
Britain around 1880 and now is responsible for the decline in population of
their native Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris).
These tree squirrels have adapted well to urban life and can be found in
back yards and parks across much of the southeast. Food sources include a
variety of nuts and seeds including acorns and
dogwood seeds. They have
been known to chew into electrical lines, home insulation and cause other
wildlife related issues.
