The
Giant Swallowtail, the Thoas and the female Tiger Swallowtails are the largest butterflies
in North America. It is considered by many a citrus pest. Also known as the
Orange dog it sometimes descends on citrus groves in mass, usually resulting
in mass spraying. This butterfly is difficult to outwardly distinguish from
the Thoas Swallowtail except for a notch in the top of the abdomen of the
Giant Swallowtail that the Thoas does not have.
This photo was taken on the
banks of Dale Hollow lake on May 19th.
