Cicada Killer

Common Name: Cicada Killer
Scientific Name: Sphecius speciosus
Range:
Caterpillar
This photo of a Cicada Killer clutching a cicada it just killed and looking for it's burrow in our yard in middle Tennessee. Cicada Killer are fascinating insects, that hunt down and kill Cicadas and bring their bodies back to their burrows much like a bird of prey bring back their kills to their nests.

It's amazing to see the large wasps carrying an even larger Cicada as it flies back to it's burrow.
