power generation for the surrounding area via the Great Falls Dam and Center Hill Dam. Great Falls Dam was built for power generation by the Tennessee Electric Power Company and completed in 1916. It was later purchased by TVA in 1939. Whitewater rapids below the dam are world renowned for kayaking and canoeing and have been the site for national and international paddling events. In 1998 and 1999 the Caney Fork river within Rock Island State Park was the location for the U.S. Freestyle Kayak Team Trials.

The most popular section is the calm water section from the Center Hill Dam down river 28 miles to it's confluence with the Cumberland River. The whitewater section which runs from Clifty Bridge downstream through Scott's Gulf to Bee Creek and is rated Class V whitewater river during most of the spring. This section is recommended for experienced kayakers and rafters only.
