Black Bear Reintroduction at
Big South Fork NRRA

Due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting the Black Bear has not roamed the Big South Fork area for nearly 100 years. But thanks to a project by by the US Geological Survey (USGS)

In 1996 and 1997 14 female bears were relocated into the Big South Fork from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park 75 miles to the Southeast.
