Fatal Canoe & Kayak Accidents

This is obviously not a complete list of fatal canoe and kayak accidents. It's just a meant as a reminder to be careful out there. These water based activities are potentially deadly.  

 
  1. Olympic National Park, Washington - Alex Dixon, 21, and his partner capsized 46-degree water after being helped he became increasingly non-responsive and later died, from apparently from hypothermia.
  2. Tygart River, West Virginia - July 24, 2005, John Mullen, 37 an avid kayaker and outdoor writer for the Washington Post was killed while kayaking the Tygart River in West Virginia.
  3. Channel Islands National Park, CA - May 29, 2005, Grace Huang, 26,
  4. Shenango River, Pennsylvania - David "Dub" Woods, 55, canoe capsized while he was raccoon hunting
  5. Blackwater River, West Virginia - March 25 1989, Charlie Deaton capsized his kayak, struck his head and died of those injuries.
  6. Stoneycreek River, Pennsylvania - April 10th 1999, 53 year old paddler in 9' kayak capsized and pulled through strainer. Was wearing PFD at time.
  7. Lake Marburg, Pennsylvania - July 23rd 1999, canoe capsized man swam for shore with no PFD. Alcohol involved.
  8. American River - May 1996, Luka Sribar of Slovenia drowned while kayaking below Pacific House.
