Fatal Lightning Strikes

Lightning StrikesAlthough rare, lightning strikes are a serious threat to outdoor enthusiasts we are often above treeline, in the middle of a lake, or in a treestand, places not particularly safe in terms of exposure to lightning.

 

  1. Cape Hatteras NS, North Carolina - July 5 1997, Waldo Morales, 18 was struck and killed on the beach near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
  2. Grand Teton, Wyoming - July 26th 2003, 5 Climbers struck by lightning 1 killed.
  3. Brice Canyon, Utah - August 12th 2004, a 58-year-old Dutch national who was hiking the Bristlecone Loop Trail struck by lightning near Yovimpa Point, elevation 9,000 feet.
  4. Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, CA - July 2005, Steve McCullagh, 29, killed by lightning strike while hiking with scout troop 4 miles west of Mount Whitney at an elevation of 10,700 feet. A scout also died later from lightning related injuries.
  5. Sequoia & Kings Canyon, CA - July 2005, Ryan Collins , 13, killed by lightning strike while hiking with scout troop 4 miles west of Mount Whitney at an elevation of 10,700 feet. Ryan's troop leader was also killed in the incident.
  6. Camp Steiner, Utah - August 3, 2005, one boy scout was killed and three other injured when lightning struck the log structure they were sleeping in.
  7. Montrose County, Colorado, Robert Heichel, 40, from Washington died after being struck by lightning near his hunting camp.
